Hi,
I am using confluence 3.0 and don´t know how to add a subcategory. In Browse > Confluence Admin > Manage categories is no option do add a subcategory. How to assign a category as subcategory ?
Emil Sjödin
Hi Ulrich,
Which version of our theme are you using? The sub categories was introduced in the 1.3 version of our theme.
Cheers,
Emil

Hi Emil,
refinedwiki 1.3.1.

Emil Sjödin
When you have added a category the add subcategory link will be visible in the option column. Take a look at this example.
Ulrich Thye
oh oh oh, sorry sorry,
I have seen this page many times but never realised this button / option.
Sorry

No problem Ulrich..

Hi,
we play with confluence 3.2 and use as standard language GERMAN. From the dashboard all links in breadcrumb start with "Übersicht". When we use the Panel to switch to a space the breadcrumb start with "Dashboard".
Any idea what we make wrong?
Ralf
Emil Sjödin
Hi Ralf,
The Original Theme does not have full support for German yet. WE are working on it right now. It will be shipped in couple of months.
Ralf Hille
Hi,
how can see anonymus users a panel. Can we have a option to customize rights on a panel?
Emil Sjödin
Hi Ralf,
Do you mean category-dashboard when you say panel?
A category is only visible if the active user has view permissions on a space located in the category.
Cheers
Emil
Ralf Hille
Hi Emil,
i mean the panels from your RefinedWiki Themes. The idea is to add a panel called "Our Company" and add some fixed text to the panel - without any space.
This text must be visible for all users also anonymous user.
Currently i can see the panel after login - if i am a anonymous user i don't see the panel.
Cheers
Ralf
Emil Sjödin
Hi Ralf,
Unfortunately this can not be done. A work around is to add a empty space with anonymous access to the category.

I have a question -- it appears that if there are more tabs than can be displayed in the width of a user's browser, the extra tabs are simply not shown. Is this correct? Is there anything (short of reducing the number of tabs we need or their names) that we can do about this? This would be a significant problem for us, and would limit the usefulness of the tabbed categories.
Thanks!
Emil Sjödin
Hi Jessica,
That is the correct behavior of the plugin. This problem occurs as you said when you have a lot of categories and when the user are using a small browser window.
We are thinking about a couple of solutions to fix this problem. But it's quite hard to manage a solution which fits all users. Some users have very big screens and some very small screens.
A workaround for you would be using shorter product names.
Cheers

Emil,
The Category feature of RefinedWiki is a very significant upgrade to any Confluence site. I am doing a pilot now and trying to figure out how to manage enterprise deployment where there are multiple divisions, and then business units below them. With a two tier structure as RefinedWiki offers now, I could provide some structure/navigation down to the business unit level. From there, without any further (nested) subcategory, everything would be in a single bucket. If there was at least one more level of subcategory (3) or two (3,4), I think these business units would have enough structure left to use to organize their different kinds of spaces.
Are there any plans to allow for a deeper category structure?

I am working also on integration of posts into confluence and I found out that it is more important to be able to assign customized sorting to spaces – as it uses now alphabetical listing, I have to add numbers infront of post to get the right listing. I would need to have 6-12 categories for devisions with 8 Levels of sub-categories to reflect my organization diagramm within Confluence. 3. levels of sub-spaces would fit to our demand if customizeable sorting would be possible.
Thanks for the ability that catergories and sub-categories are sortable through assigneable numbers. If it would be possible to add numbers for sorting in "Edit Space Category" to a selected space, it would be really helpful for adopting organizational struktures within RefinedWiki.
Cheers
Emil Sjödin
Hi Douglas and Klaus,
We will consider your thoughts about the levels of categories, i have added it to our feature wish-list.
The reason why we doesn't have the ability to have more category today is that we don't want to undermine the navigation features of the spaces.
About the sorting of categories, I think this is a good feature, i have also added it to the wish-list.
Cheers
Emil
Klaus Feldmann
Thanks. Just to make sure that it takes the right way for this feature request:
More categories dropped in priority for me now. Sortable spaces got much more priority. Maybe a custom number or better a free field provided by RefinedWiki in addition to the space name could solve this and might be not a big deal to accomplish.
I did run also in the which of more categories at the time I was starting with confluence and was trying to adopt an organizational structure too RefinedWiki. Later I found it to be impractically in usage for employes as it was focused on organizational need instead of production. An organization has always much more functions/posts in his structure as people employed. Most spaces do now reflect different lines of production, customer-projects, management-projects etc. and documentations.
The current alphabetical sorting is impractical because I have to add numbers in front of space names to get them in an contextual order.
Thanks in advance
cheers,
Tadhg McCarthy
+1 for deeper category structure
We could really use this feature too, I can see our categories getting quite out of control after a few years. What we can currently achieve:
1. Projects[category]
2.------Client - Campaign [category]
2.1----------------------Deliverable [space]
2.1----------------------Deliverable [space]
We do a large amount of small projects so this list will quickly grow to an intimidating length. We also have a lot of clients, and therefore moving the client up the tree would result in having a category menu that extended beyond the edge of the browser, in the same way Jessica describes above. It would be much tidier if we could set our structure up like this:
1. Projects [category]
2.------Client [category]
2.1--------Campaign [category]
2.1.1----------------------Deliverable [space]
2.1.2----------------------Deliverable [space]
Then it becomes easier to fold all and browse to correct deliverable more easily.
In fact that's brought something else to mind. On a separate note is it possible to set the categories so they start off collapsed rather than expanded?
Besides these few gripes I'm really loving Refined Wiki so thanks for the great work.
Tadhg
Emil Sjödin
Hi Tadhg, I've answered your questions here.
Geert Peter de Oude
Is there a way to change the color of the Category on Space Level?
regards,
Emil Sjödin
Hi Geert,
You can only change the color at the category level.

I'm wondering how you can hyperlink to a category from a page without using an absolute URL? It would be good to use markup like:
Emil Sjödin
Hi,
this is not possible in the current version. You can only create links to categories with an absolute URL. I like the idea of a category link macro. I've added it to our feature wish-list.
Daniel Wirtz
Is there a way to create a sub-subcategory?
So the structure would be:
Daniel
Daniel Wirtz
Sorry,
I didn´t see, that someone asked this before.
Daniel Wirtz
Hi,
now I have another question.
I created a category and a subcategory. On the "opening-page" of the category I implemented the macro "spaces-in-category". It works wonderfull. But when i look on that "opening-page" the heading "Spaces" is written in black color. But the subcategory in the list of subcategories is written in blue.
How can i change the text color?
On every other page the text color is black. And on the "opening-page" the text color is also black. Just the subcategories in the list are written in blue color.
Sorry, if my English isn´t very well, I´m from germany.
Daniel
Emil Sjödin
Hi Daniel,
We have started the work on unlimited numbers of subcategories. We will release this feature in version 2.2.
You have found a bug. We will also fix this in the next version. Here is a temporary fix for your problem:
Go to: Browse > Confluence admin > Look and Fell > Stylesheet and add this code
Daniel Wirtz
Great it works.
Thank you!
Klaus Feldmann
Hi Emil,
Current team-label is a composition of following three parts: rw + category + spaceKey > rw_category_spaceKey
If you could add a forth part it could be used for sorting spaces by sortnumber:
rw_category__sortId_spaceKey
Not the best idea but if sortID (maybe a two digit 00-99) could be edited manually – it would be at least a possibility. If no sortId is applied it would just sort by spaceKey as people used to.
A better way would be to add a separate field.
Ii would be genius of you if sortID could be applied by creating a space and/or editing space category label.
If that would be possible I could end up using numbers as spacekeys and use acronyms instead.
We only use sorting by spacekey or spacename on reports created with reporting plugin.
Why do we need this? Spaces are organized within categories followed by an hierarchical order.
Thanks a lot in advance. Cheers

Hello,
I would like to achieve the following category/subcategory setup:
Projects (=cat)
-- Project x (=space)
-- Project y (=space)
-- Closed Projects (=subcat)
---- Project m (=space)
---- Project m (=space)
but end up with:
Projects (=cat)
-- Closed Projects (=subcat)
---- Project m (=space)
---- Project m (=space)
-- Project x (=space)
-- Project y (=space)
is there a way to define that spaces that are only part of the Project category (but not of a subcategory) are listed before rather than after all subcategories (and their contents)?
TIA!
Emil Sjödin
Hi martin, which version of the original theme are you using?
If you are using the latest 2.2 it should behave as you want it to.

Martin Moser
Hi Emil,
thanks for the quick reply - I think we are using the previous one (testing refinedwiki at the moment).
Martin Moser
Hello,
I found that on pages that display e.g. a video (per {widget:url=somewhere}) or attached presentations (per {viewppt: ....}) the category overlay you evoke by clicking on the small triangle next to a name on a category tab slips under the area covered by the video/presentation. Is there an easy way to fix this perhaps?
Thanks,
Martin
Emil Sjödin
Hi Martin, thanks for reporting this problem. I've done some testing and found that this problem only occurs in some browsers. We will try to fix this problem in the next version.
Henry Snijders
It is possible set a custom url in the category. Is it possible to limit the permission to a certain custom url on a group basis next to the logged in or not option? In my case I would like to restrict the link to the people directory that I would like to use as an internal 'facebook', not suitable for external clients.
Emil Sjödin
Hi Henry, at the moment you can only choose between logged in users and anonymous. However there is a workaround for this problem. You can type in a custom url without choosing any permission levels. Then add a space (with the view permission you prefer) to the category. The catgory will only be viewable for does users who has view permission for one or more spaces in that category.
The downside of this solution is taht ther will be an empty space in your wiki.
Eckhard Kämmer
Hi Emil, when I click on a category tab in the Original Theme, all subcategories and spaces within the subcategories are shown in a drop-down "tab space menu". With a high number of spaces within the category (and subcategories), the tab space menu extends beyond the bottom of the screen and the user has to scroll down the browser window to select a space. Is there a way to collapse the spaces within each subcategory by default in these tab space menues, similar to what can be done with the spaces-in-category macro?
Thanks, Eckhard
Emil Sjödin
Hi Eckhard, this is not possible right now. I've added you request to our feature wish-list.
Jonas Lindström
Eckhard, have you tried using the multi-column view for the category tabs? That way you can fit more spaces on screen at the same time. Although it can be a bit overwhelming when expanding a category takes over the entire screen. :) But it's still worth trying!
Mike Rogers
Hi,
We are using the Category tabs to link to ONE specific space, is it possible to hide the drop down button that is automatically created on the category tab? When it is clicked, there is nothing to display since we are using a direct link to the space, instead of showing the category.
Thanks,
Mike
Emil Sjödin
Yes, go to Browse > Confluence admin > RefinedWiki Original Theme > Theme configuration and disable the category drop-down feature.
Don Gamble
Using v3 of the plug-in. How do you remove the dashboard menu item from the category drop-down menus? When I look at your site I only see spaces listed, with no dashboard.
Emil Sjödin
Hi Don,
In the theme configuration page you can set the Category drop down to singel_column mode.
Don Gamble
Thanks that works.
You may want to mention that in the configuration page documentation - currently it is not obvious that the two features are related.
Don Gamble
Emil, I'm looking for a way to customize the look so that there are icons associated with the category menus and menu items. Is this something possible?
I have a mockup if I can upload it somewhere.
Brian Meyer
Hi Emil, sorry if this has been asked. Our deployment of confluence has very few spaces, but many pages. It would be useful for us to build categories out of pages, not spaces. Is it possible to build menus out of spaces or pages instead of categories?
Emil Sjödin
Not at the moment. This is something we are thinking about. I will let you know if we move forward with this.
Don Gamble
I would strongly second this request. It would be very useful to link to pages inside of spaces and not just to the home page of each space.
Christian Neureiter
Hi!
I hope my question is placed correct here. My user always do face the problem that they click in the wrong "part of a category". When you click the name of the category in the menu a "space overview" page is loaded. If you click on the small arrow next to the name of the category the dropdown is shown. Is it possible to configure refinedwiki, so that also a click on the name opens the dropdown?
thank you,
Christian
Emil Sjödin
Hi Christian,
Not at the moment. I've added your comment to our internal system.
Have you tried out the keyboard navigation feature for the category menu. Tap the key n and then navigate with the arrows. To open a category drop down use the "down" arrow. To get back to the menu tap the key n.
Here is more info about the Keyboard shortcuts.
Marcus Raitner
Hi,
is there a way to give one of the tabs a different color or even a small logo besides the text? We have one main category, which I want to highlight this way (or at least somehow)
Thanks,
Marcus
Emil Sjödin
Hi Marcus,
In the next version of the Original Theme it will be possible to show the category logo in the category menu.
Cheers
Marcus Raitner
Hi Emil,
that's great! But until the next version, could I modify the CSS somehow, such that one particular label gets a different color?
Thanks,
Marcus
Emil Sjödin
Yes, you can target the category with this CSS code:
Marcus Raitner
Hi Emil,
I tried
#rw_category_openpm a { background-color:#F00; }and I get a red background, but only while the first tab (Overview) is selected; if I select any other tab the background is as before.
Thanks,
Marcus
Emil Sjödin
Where have you added your CSS code? Have you tried to refresh your browser when you have switched tab. The old styles could be cached in your browser.
Marcus Raitner
I've added it to Confluence admin > Look and feel > stylesheets and it work whenever I'm one the overview tab; on every other tab it does not work ... I just refreshed the browser and emptied the cache, but no difference.
Mike Rogers
Hello!
My company uses RW for our online help documentation. We love the categories so that we can have a category, and then use the sub-categories as our version numbering.
We were wondering if it was possible to change each spaces color, like we can change category colors.
Right now we have:
PRODUCT
PRODUCT 11.0
PRODUCT 11.1
PRODUCT 11.2
It would be great if 11.0, 11.1, and 11.2 could be under the same category, but have different colors. Perhaps using the Global Stylesheet we target the space and possibly define this? Is this possible?
Jeremy Seely
I am trying to re-add a category which I previously deleted, but it won't let me use the same name key because it already exists.
The error message is: The name key that you have entered already exists.
Where are the name keys located so that I can delete the old one?
Emil Sjödin
Which version of the theme are you using?
It checks for name keys in both categories and subCategories. Please make sure that there is no subCategories or categories with that name key.
Jeremy Seely
Thanks Emil, turns out I was using that name key for a different category without realizing it. The next question is, is there a way to change the name key on a category?
Emil Sjödin
Hi Jeremy,
No that's not directly possible. You have to create a new category and then drag all spaces and subcategories in to it, then delete the old one.
netmotion
Dear Emil,
I hope my questions finds you well.
I have the 3.0 version of the refinedwiki.
Thank you,
netmotion
Emil Sjödin
Hi,
Question 1:
Have you set any permission for that category? Please make sure that you have set no permission and make sure that the space you have linked to is organized under this category. (The permission settings are used when you are linking to an external URL)
Question 2:
You can remove the arrow with CSS:
Add this code to: Confluence admin > Look and feel > stylesheet
Ashish Sharma
Emil,
I tried to remove the dropdown arrow on one of my categories, with this code but no luck. I just want that category to point to a URL.
Here is the global CSS I used:
XBLOG is the name of my subcategory. Any ideas? I'm using ver 3.3 on Confluence v4.3.5
Emil Sjödin
Hi Ashish,
It should be like this:
Don't forgot the space between the to selectors.
